Coding Specialist III
Job Details:
Assigns diagnostic codes to medical record information. Codes charts under the ICD-9-CM for statistical and MS-DRG reimbursement assignment. Abstracts required data into hospital abstracting system.
Minimum Education:
Equivalent to an Associate's Degree in medical information technology (with course work in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD-9-CM coding and prospective payment) preferred
Minimum Work Experience:
- 3-5 years experience coding inpatient acute care charts
Required License/Certification:
- Certified Coding Specialist
- RHIA or RHIT credential highly desired
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of advanced medical terminology
- An extensive knowledge of ICD-9 and reimbursement methodologies, documentation practices, and MS-DRGschemes
- Professional working knowledge of MS-DRG, CPT, HCPCS, and APCs
- Proficient in coding inpatient medical records
- Ability to use various computer software programs to include3M encoder
- Ability to utilize clinical knowledge in accordance with coding guidelines
- Excellent verbal communication in person and on telephone
- Excellent written communication
- Read, write, understand and communicate clearly in English
- Willingness to educate staff and physicians and/or office staff
- Use a computer for clinical data entry/retrieval
- Organize and prioritize work; Work independently
